American Sardines

ARTWORK BY CATHERINE XIE

Catherine Xie is a current junior at Weston High School in the class of '22. She enjoys reading and painting but writes less than she thinks she should. Many of her pieces are food-centered, but she's not sure if it's because she likes the imagery or if she's just always hungry. Her work has been recognized at the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, The Incandescent Review, and the MOCA Westport High School Art Exhibition.

"American Sardines" captures the creepiness of the canned sardines Catherine loved as a child. The sardines have watery, emotional eyes, while the human has blank, lifeless ones. It has been previously published by the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
