an ode to a soybean sprout
WRITTEN BY CLAIRE KIM
i cannot
cut your
roots off.
mother used
to say,
seriously,
it’s just a
puny sprout,.
i cannot
cut its
head off.
sinless sprouts,
locked inside
the dark
room when
mother leaves.
soybean sprout,
tell me
you remember
the summer
marigold
days
when
you and i
talked and
cried
as we grasp
onto our
swollen heads
from the
cornflower sadness,
desires,
and absence
for this
and that.
soybean sprout,
i cannot cut
your head off with a homi like mother. i trim you,
imagining
i'm taking
your little
verona yellow hat, attached to your
white body, off
